06 Sep Something Spicy Is Brewing at HAB Dental
Up north, the arrival of fall is traditionally associated with piles of colorful leaves, caramel apples and crisp breezes. In Florida, as the best dental team in Boynton Beach will tell you, the changing of the seasons us usually marked by less humidity and more traffic. These days, it doesn’t matter where you live because the advent of fall now seems to be tied to the return of pumpkin-spice lattes.
The Boynton Beach dentists at HAB Dental, located in the Publix Plaza on Hagen Ranch Road, aren’t immune to the appeal of a creamy pumpkin-spice latte from Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or even McDonald’s. But they want you to know that those lattes are packed with sugar and calories.
This year, the first official day of fall is Monday, September 23 – but Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s apparently didn’t feel the need to wait before bringing the popular fall beverage back. Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts started serving them up in August. McDonald’s had previously announced that it will at least wait until September before bringing back the McCafé Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, is the contributing nutrition editor at Health. The nutritionist is also a New York Times best-selling author, a consultant for the New York Yankees and a fan of pumpkin-spice lattes. In What to Know About Pumpkin Spice Lattes, she gets to the bottom of the issue of the ingredients in your favorite seasonal offering.
- “A tall Starbucks PSL made with whole milk and whipped cream clocks in at 330 calories, 15 grams of fat, 40 grams of carb with 39 from sugar, and 11 grams of protein,” she reports. “To put that in perspective, a Starbucks Cheese Danish is lower in everything, including sugar, with 28 fewer grams than the PSL.”
- If Dunkin Donuts is your favorite destination for pumpkin spice, you’ll be happy to know that, as Sass points out, their website has a customization and nutrition tool so you can choose the type of milk, flavor, and sweetener you want in your latte. “It calculates that a small drink made with whole milk, pumpkin swirl flavor, and no additional sweetener provides 230 calories, 6 grams of fat, 36 grams of carb (all as sugar), and 7 grams of protein,” Sass says.
- At McDonald’s, “A small PSL made with whole milk contains 270 calories, 9 grams of fat, 41 grams of carb with 39 as sugar, and 10 grams of protein. That’s more calories, carbs, and sugar than their Baked Apple Pie, which is a good reminder to enjoy a McDonald’s PSL as a dessert,” Sass says.
