Does Santa Have a Sweet Tooth?

Have you been good this year? For Boca Raton dentist Dr. Rosemary Baghdassarian, being good means brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day and remembering to floss.

Santa Claus has other standards that he takes into consideration when he’s making his list of who has been naughty and who has been nice. Children who want to score extra points often leave a snack for Father Christmas along with a little something to quench his thirst.

Here in the United States, we usually think that cookies and a glass of milk are just what Santa might like. But before he reaches our shores, he has been filling up on lots of other things as he makes his way around the world.

What Is Santa Snacking On?

The intrepid journalists at NPR surveyed the diplomatic corps in Washington and some food experts to find out what kids around the world leave out for Santa

Saint Nick starts his rounds in Australia, where he might find a bottle of beer or glass of sherry and some fruitcake waiting for him. “Of course, it’s summer in December south of the equator, so a cold beer hardly seems out of place. Nor does a bit of barbecue in South Africa, or fufu with egusi — a West African seafood and meat soup — in Nigeria.”

In Sweden, children leave a bowl of rice porridge, called risgrynsgröt, outside the door of their family’s home for the Jultomte, which is what Santa is called in Sweden. “Unlike the American Santa, the Jultomte enters your house through the front door, not through the chimney, so that’s why the porridge is left there,” Kate Reuterswärd, press officer at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C., told NPR. “The rice porridge is thickened with milk and flavored with cinnamon and a little salt.”

By the time he gets to your house, he might be ready for something sweet!

So, as Christmas draws near, you might want to pop some cookies in the oven. More importantly, as the song says:

“You better watch out; you better not cry.
Santa Claus is coming to town…
“He sees you when you’re sleeping.
He knows when you’re awake.
He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake!”

Dr. Rosemary and her team at HAB Dental of Boynton Beach, who also have a dental office in Boca Raton, can’t see you when you’re sleeping and they can only guess when you’re awake, but they can tell if you’ve been bad or good – at least when it comes to taking care of your teeth.
